12 Arrested for recruiting non-qualified people in the Tzaneen area to register for a disability grant
Twelve (12) suspects, aged 31 to 59, were arrested on Monday, 22 February 2021 in various neighborhoods of Tzaneen for allegations of fraud and corruption.
Limpopo Hawks spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke said the multi disciplinary takedown operation was conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation assisted by Tzaneen SAPS First Responders, Crime Intelligence and SASSA officials.
It is alleged that between the period 2018 and 2019 the South African Social Security Agency officials colluded with an intermediary to recruit non-qualified people in the Tzaneen area to register for a disability grant at a fee.
“The Hawks investigations have revealed that over 21 people were recruited and paid R3500 gratification each, and consequently the department suffered a loss of over R300 000.00 due to these illegal activities.
“Suspects who include 3 Nkowankowa SASSA officials, an intermediary and 8 unqualified SASSA beneficiaries will soon appear in Tzaneen court on charges of fraud and corruption.
“The investigation aimed at finding other suspects is still ongoing,” concluded Captain Maluleke.
